When ChatGPT answers a shopping question, it often links a few websites. Those links show where it looked. If your rivals are on those pages and you're not, you're missing from the answer before it's even written. This guide shows which kinds of sites get linked, how to sort your own list, and three ways to get onto them.

Where to start
Collect the links and sort them by type
In the study, ChatGPT gave 160 shopping answers with 408 links between them. That's about 2.5 links per answer, pulled from 76 websites. Brand sites took 33.1% of the links. Publishers and blogs took 20.1%. Marketplaces took 8.3%. Social sites took just 1.2%. YouTube got 2 links and Reddit got 3.
Across all the AI engines in the study, "best" and "top" list pages took 39.6% of citations. That's the biggest single target. But the study covered one country, two categories and one day. Your category may look different. So check your own.
Ask ChatGPT 10 buying questions in your category, like "best vitamin C serum for oily skin". Use a fresh chat each time. Copy every link it shows. Then paste them all into the sorter below.

Get onto the pages ChatGPT already trusts
There are three ways in. Start with the one that matches your biggest gap from Step 1.
1. Get into "best" and "top" list pages. Find the list pages ChatGPT cites. Write to each author. Offer samples and facts they can check, like ingredients, price, sizes and test results. Keep it short and don't ask for a good review. Also publish your own honest comparison page. Include rivals and say where they win.
2. Fix your marketplace listings. If ChatGPT links marketplace pages, make sure you're in the right category. Set the right price so you show in the right price-band filter. A serum filed under "body lotion" won't show for serum questions.
3. Make sure ChatGPT can reach your site. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. Check that robots.txt allows it. Check that your firewall or bot filter doesn't block it.

Log every gap and work through it
A gap is a page ChatGPT cites that names a rival but not you. Each one is a clear job. Log the question, the rival, the page and your next action. Then work down the list, one page at a time.
Put list pages and marketplace pages first, because they turned up most in the study. Re-ask your questions every month. When a gap closes, mark it done. When a new page appears, add it.

Why do brand sites get so many links?
In the study, brand sites took 33.1% of ChatGPT's links. ChatGPT often links the product page it describes. That's why your own site must be reachable and clear.
Are Reddit and YouTube worth the effort?
Not for ChatGPT shopping answers in that study. YouTube got 2 links and Reddit got 3 out of 408. Check your own results before you spend time there.
Should I pay to get onto list pages?
No. Offer samples and checkable facts instead. Paid placements often must be labelled, and readers and AI tools may trust them less.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. OAI-SearchBot is the one that matters for ChatGPT search answers.
