When ChatGPT or Perplexity answers a buying question, a surprising share of what it leans on is a forum thread — usually Reddit. That makes Reddit one of the few places where a small brand can get named alongside big ones. It also makes it the single most over-promised tactic in AI search, because the people selling it never mention how unstable the numbers are or how fast a subreddit will throw you out. This page gives you both halves.

Where to start
The real numbers, including the unflattering one
Semrush tracked more than 230,000 prompts over 13 weeks across ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, covering over 100 million citations. Reddit finished in the top five cited domains on all three. On Perplexity it was the single most-cited source. Separately, the Wix Studio AI Search Lab found Perplexity draws about 17% of its citations from discussions and forums.
So far this is the version you have already been told. Here is the part that gets left out.
In the same Semrush data, Reddit appeared in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August, then fell to around 10% by mid-September. That is not a rounding error. That is the single biggest input to one engine's answers collapsing by a factor of six inside six weeks, almost certainly because of a change at the engine rather than anything that happened on Reddit.
Read that the right way round. It does not mean Reddit is worthless — it stayed top-two on ChatGPT even after the fall, and it was steadier on Perplexity and AI Mode. It means a strategy whose whole logic is "Reddit is the top source" can stop working in a month, without warning, because of a decision in somebody else's product. Treat Reddit as one good channel, not as the plan.
Find the threads that already decide your category
You are not trying to create new threads. You are trying to be a useful presence in the ones AI engines already reach for. Those threads usually exist already and are often years old.
The way to find them is to ask the engines themselves. Take a real buying question from your customers, ask it in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and read the source list rather than the answer. Any Reddit thread that appears is a thread worth knowing about.
Thread finder
Enter a buying question and your category. This builds the search strings to run — it does not call anything, and nothing leaves your browser.
Run each string on Google rather than inside Reddit's own search, which is poor. Keep the threads that are still getting replies — a dead thread from 2016 is cited less often and you cannot usefully join it.
Then do the only thing that works: answer the question properly, as yourself, in the threads where you genuinely know the answer. Mention your product only where it is directly responsive and say plainly that it is yours. A comment that helps a stranger decide is the thing that gets quoted. A comment that reads like marketing gets downvoted into invisibility, which means no engine will ever surface it.
The rules, before you get removed
Reddit is not a publishing channel and treating it as one fails quickly. Three things to know.
Subreddits set their own rules and they vary wildly. Many ban self-promotion outright. Some allow it only in a weekly thread, or only from accounts with a verified flair. Read the sidebar and the pinned rules of each subreddit before your first comment, not after your first removal.
Undisclosed promotion is the fast route to a site-wide ban. Posting about your own product without saying it is yours, or running several accounts to make a product look popular, is the behaviour moderators are best at spotting. The downside is not a slap on the wrist; it is losing the account and sometimes the domain being auto-filtered across many subreddits.
Deleted and downvoted content stops helping you. Anything removed disappears from the page an engine would read. There is no version of this where you post aggressively and keep the citations.
Before you post: a quick self-check
- Ask your top five buying questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode. Write down every Reddit thread in the sources.
- Read the rules of each subreddit before commenting. They differ, and the sidebar is the authority.
- Answer as a person, under one account, and disclose any connection in the comment itself.
- Make the comment useful even to someone who ignores your link. That is the part that earns the citation.
- Do not build your whole plan here. Reddit's share of one engine fell sixfold in six weeks and could again.
The honest limits of what is known here.
The citation figures come from third-party trackers sampling prompts, not from the engines. OpenAI, Google and Perplexity do not publish how they weight any source. Two trackers measuring slightly different things — share of responses containing a domain, versus share of total citations — will report numbers that look contradictory, and both can be right. Treat all of them as a rough direction, not a dial.
There is also no mechanism to make an engine cite a given thread. You can be present and useful in the places that get cited, which raises your odds. Anyone offering guaranteed Reddit citations is describing something that does not exist, and the method behind that promise is usually the kind that gets your brand banned.
