Buyers now ask an AI assistant what to buy. The assistant searches, compares products and, with the buyer's permission, can help them buy. This is called agentic commerce. Today, ChatGPT mostly handles the finding and comparing part. The purchase often still happens on your own checkout. So the job for a Shopify or D2C store is simple: make your products easy for an assistant to read, trust and recommend. This guide does that in three steps.

Where to start

  1. Product pages thin or messy? Start at Step 1 and score one product.
  2. Products are clean but policies are missing? Go to Step 2.
  3. Everything is in place? Use Step 3 to check if assistants name you.
Step 1 of 3 · 15 minutes

Clean your product data

An AI assistant can't pick up your product. It only knows what your page and your product data say. If the title is vague, the price is hidden or the stock is wrong, the assistant has less reason to suggest you.

Fix four things on every product. First, a clear title: brand, product type and the key detail, like "Northline Trail Runner, women's, wide fit". Second, a visible price with the currency. Third, live stock that updates from your inventory, so an assistant never sends a buyer to a sold-out item. Fourth, a description that says what the product is, who it's for, and its size, weight or fit. Write it in plain sentences, not just a list of features.

Start with your best sellers. Score them below, fix what the tool flags, then move on.

Step 2 of 3 · 15 minutes

Publish your policies and product facts in plain text

Assistants want to know what happens after the click. How much is shipping? How long does it take? Can the buyer return it? Put those answers in plain text on your site, not inside an image or a pop-up. Shopify asks for a terms of service page, a privacy policy and a return and refund policy before you can sell on ChatGPT.

Then help machines read your products. Add product structured data with the name, price and stock status. For Google, also keep a Merchant Center feed. Google's rule is simple: the facts in your structured data, your feed and your visible page must match. A price that differs in two places gives an assistant a reason to doubt you.

What about ChatGPT's own product feed? OpenAI and Stripe published the Agentic Commerce Protocol on 29 September 2025. It is an open standard, still in beta, with parts for product feeds, checkout and delegated payment. In March 2026, OpenAI said it supports product discovery and that merchants can use their own checkout. You don't need a feed if ChatGPT already crawls your site. Feed onboarding is for approved partners. OpenAI's pages don't agree on a standalone Instant Checkout, so don't plan around it yet.

Step 3 of 3 · 10 minutes a week

Let AI crawlers in, then check if assistants recommend you

Open your robots.txt. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it won't appear in ChatGPT search answers. Make sure it is allowed on your product, collection and policy pages. Do the same for Googlebot.

Then test like a buyer. Ask the questions your customers ask, such as "best trail running shoes for wide feet under $150". Leave your brand name out. Ask each question several times, in fresh chats, in ChatGPT and Gemini. Answers change between runs, so one answer proves nothing. Log each run below and watch your naming rate over weeks.

Reality check. No assistant publishes how it picks products. These steps don't guarantee a mention. They remove the blocks you control and make your products easy to read and trust. ChatGPT shopping is live for US users and still expanding, and the checkout features are changing fast. Check the official pages before you build anything big.
Can ChatGPT buy from my store today?

Mostly, ChatGPT helps buyers find and compare products. The purchase often happens on your own checkout. OpenAI says merchants can keep using their own checkout.

Do I need to send ChatGPT a product feed?

Not if ChatGPT already crawls your site. Feed onboarding is for approved partners. Clean pages and an allowed crawler come first.

Does this help with Google too?

Yes. Google uses structured data and a Merchant Center feed. Keep the facts the same on your page, your data and your feed.

Why log answers more than once?

Assistants give different answers to the same question. Five or more runs per question gives you a fairer naming rate than one lucky or unlucky answer.
